MacBeth
Conceptual design for Shakespeare’s MacBeth, set in 1880s present day New Mexico. Intended to examine American values of masculinity, individualism, and ambition through the historical context of colonial settler expansion and the realities of what we know of the Wild West, I also wanted to challenge the Hollywood concept of a “cowboy” that has come to be accepted as “fact” – white, heterosexual, and ultimately a symbol of the very American values that reflect hundreds of years of imperialism, while simultaneously erasing the rich multicultural history of the American Southwest.
